LE'VANT, adjective [Latin levo.]

Eastern; denoting the part of the hemisphere where the sun rises.

Forth rush the levant and the ponent winds.

LEVANT', noun Properly, a country to the eastward; but appropriately, the countries of Turkey, Syria, Asia Minor, Greece, Egypt, etc. which are washed by the Mediterranean and its contiguous waters.
