CONTUMACIOUS, adjective [Latin , to swell.]

1. Literally, swelling against; haughty. Hence, obstinate; perverse; stubborn; inflexible; unyielding; disobedient; as a contumacious child.

2. In law, wilfully disobedient to the orders of a court.
