HOR'RID, adjective [Latin horridus. See Horror.]

1. That does or may excite horror; dreadful; hideous; shocking; as a horrid spectacle or sight; horrid sympathy.

2. Rough; rugged. This is the literal and primary sense.

Horrid with fern, and intricate with thorn.

3. Shocking; very offensive; a colloquial sense.
